The humanities is a broad interdisciplinary topic that covers the arts and letters with an emphasis on the art forms of architecture, art, dance, music, theatre, film and literature.

  1. The basic Humanities course is HUMA 1315: Fine Arts Appreciation, offered at Brookhaven College through several delivery systems, including:
    • stand-alone classrooms;
    • as a telecourse, developed by the DCCCD and used by other institutions worldwide;
    • as a self-paced course utilizing the telecourse tapes with flexible time periods; and
    • as an online course.
  2. A special topics course, HUMA 1302: Advanced Humanities, can be focused on individually specific or diverse subject areas.
  3. Both HUMA 1315 and HUMA 1302 also are taught as honors courses. Look for courses with section number 2800.

CUST 2370-2021 and 2022

Theme: New Technologies and Human Behavior: A Cross-Cultural Perspective
Instructors: Edleeca Thompson, Humanities and Cultural Studies and Giraud Polite, Visual Communications

The course examines the influence of new technologies on human behavior, examining how the media affect human identity and how we see ourselves and others. New Technologies in the arts also will be examined in the light of the creative process. The course will explore trends in various markets and the ways in which they satisfy and reflect changes in human needs. Advertising and marketing also will be explored in relation to consumer buying habits.

CUST 2370-2001

Theme: Mexico — A Cultural Perspective
Instructors: Charles McAdams and Edleeca Thompson, Humanities and Cultural Studies

This course focuses on the many facets of Mexico, the U.S. trading partner to the south. The course covers ancient cultures, the Spanish conquest, history, music, art, dance, literature, NAFTA and current issues.

CUST 2370-2002

Theme: Peoples and the Cultures of the Middle East
Instructors: Rima Khatib, World Languages

The course is designed to foster an interest in the diverse ethnic and cultural constructs within the Middle East and to acquaint students with Islamic institutions and their functions in both global and Middle Eastern cultural environments. The course also is designed to help students to understand the different Middle Eastern political groups, entities and factions. Topics examining the arts of the Middle East also will be explored, encouraging students to develop an appreciation of Arabian arts and creativity.
