Brookhaven College offers popular three or four-credit-hour introductory courses covering the basics of computers and their use. They are available in full semester, minimester, self-paced and online sections. If you’re not computer literate and would like to be, sign up for a section. You’ll learn:

In Lecture:

In Lab:
  • introduction to Windows
  • introduction to word processing using Microsoft Word
  • introduction to spreadsheets using Microsoft Excel
  • introduction to Internet
  • introduction to databases using Microsoft Access

Approximately three to four hours of lab work per week is required for a standard semester course. This course is supported by a dedicated lab featuring high-speed personal computers and up-to-date software. Lab assistants are always on hand to assist you with problems or questions about the labs.

There are three introductory course numbers – COSC 1300, ITSC 1401, and BCIS 1405– and they are NOT interchangeable. Which one is right for you?

If you: Enroll in:
  • plan to earn an Associate in Arts or
  • plan to earn an Associate in Science or
  • don’t want a degree, but plan to transfer this course to a four-year school
COSC 1300
  • need a business course that will transfer or
  • plan to earn an Associate in Applied Sciences or
  • plan to earn a certificate with a requirement of BCIS 1405
BCIS 1405

  • plan to earn a certificate with a requirement of ITSC 1401
Note that ITSC 1401 will generally not transfer to schools outside of the Dallas County Community College District system.
ITSC 1401

Get in on the computer revolution with COSC 1300, ITSC 1401, or BCIS 1405, and you’ll never have to say you don’t know a thing about computers again!
