* THEA substitutions: A score of 400 or higher within the past three years on the GRE Verbal may be substituted for THEA Reading. Non-math candidates may substitute six hours of college-level math for THEA Math, provided that courses are upper-division level with a grade of “B” or better. Additional academic preparation or experience may be considered at the discretion of program director.Note: meeting the minimum admissions requirements do not constitute a guarantee of admission. An interview will be conducted to determine if a candidate possesses characteristics suited to the profession of teaching. Completion of a successful interview will be at the discretion of program director. No justification is required should program director determine that an applicant has not completed a successful interview. Applicants must know and understand this prior to submitting an application.
Track 1
Teacher Academy Intern
Applicants who meet all program requirements will be admitted into the Teacher Academy as an Intern. Academy Interns are eligible to pursue and obtain a paid teaching internship on a probationary certificate once they have passed the required TExES content area exam. Applicants who lack 24 hours in their desired area of teaching may request permission to take the “challenge test” to prove subject area competency. Applicants with a score of 80 percent or above may be granted conditional admittance into the intern academy.
Track 2
Pre-Academy Participant
Applicants who possess a bachelor’s degree but do not meet other program requirements may choose to enter the program via the pre-academy track. Students on this track are allowed to take selected ACT courses by permission only while they work toward the goal of meeting requirements for admission into the academy as an intern. Pre-Academy students do not qualify for a probationary certificate and therefore are not eligible for a paid teaching internship. Students in this track are conditionally admitted on a case-by-case basis and selection will be at the discretion of program staff.
This program requires that all candidates be eligible to work in the United States . Program interns must be available to complete a 10-month, full-time, paid teaching internship with an area school district. Language proficiency testing and other assessment may be required prior to admission.
