Alternative Certification for Teachers

Brookhaven College offers teacher certification in the following subject areas:
Mathematics, Science, History and Social Studies.

To become certified in these areas, applicants must submit official college transcripts indicating successful completion of a bachelors degree with at least 12-24 hours of course work related to the subject area they are interested in teaching; example: mathematics candidates need 12-24 hours in mathematics or related subjects. In addition transcripts must reflect a 2.5 GPA on the last 60 hours. No grade lower than a “C” will be accepted. (See chart below for specific requirements for each subject and grade level)


Course Requirements by Subject and Grade Level .


History
Grades 8–12
12-24 hours in history or social studies, with a minimum of three hours in each of the following areas: world history, U.S. history, geography, government and economics.
Mathematics
Grades 4–8
12-24 hours minimum in mathematics or statistics
Mathematics
Grades 8–12
12-24 hours in mathematics or statistics
Science
Grades 4–8
12-24 hours in science, with a minimum of three hours in the physical science, earth science and life science
Science
Grades 8–12
12-24 hours in science, with a minimum of three hours in the following areas: biology, geology, astronomy, chemistry and physics
Social Studies
Grades 8–12
12-24 hours in social studies, with a minimum of three hours in the following areas: government, history, economics and geography

ACT FAQ

Note:

Individuals who do not meet minimum requirements, but do possess a bachelor's degree and appropriate teaching experience, may be granted conditional admission. This option is at the discretion of the program director and will be determined during the admissions process. No candidate will be considered “highly qualified” or eligible for a Probationary Certificate until the required TExES content area exam has been successfully completed.
