Q. Do I have to find my own teaching position?
Yes, each intern is responsible for securing employment with a public school district or state accredited private school and meeting the district's eligibility and employment requirements
Q. Does Brookhaven College place interns in teaching positions with school districts?
No. Each candidate is responsible for securing his/her own employment with a participating school district. Districts give priority to candidates who have passed the appropriate content area exam in accordance with No Child Left Behind, NCLB.
Q. How do I find a teaching position?
Candidates should begin seeking a teaching position early. The majority of the candidates are hired during the months of May, June, and July. Many area school districts hold job fairs in the spring. Some certification content areas are more in demand than others. Contacting the school district’s Human Resources/ Personnel Departments might provide insight into content areas they are currently experiencing needs in.
Q. Must an emergency situation exist before a district can employ an Alternative Certification intern?
No. Districts may fill vacancies with interns just as they would with any certified teacher.
Q. Am I paid a salary during my internship year?
Yes. Candidates hired by a participating school district receive the same salary as other first-year teachers. As with any employment, it is the employee’s responsibility to inquire as to salary and benefits. An intern is hired as teacher of record and is an employee of the school district. As such, interns are subject to all rules and responsibilities outlined in local school board policies. Once certification is earned, the internship is credited as the first year of teaching service.
Q. What if I enter the program and cannot locate a teaching position?
The program training will carry over to the following year. Students must successfully complete all ACT program requirements, including internship within three years of the start date of the program.
Job Placement
ACT staff does not place program participants in job positions at school districts, charter or private schools. However, we do help in notifying our ACT participants of job fairs or other helpful resources for job opportunities. Additionally, participants are subject to the vast networking opportunities and resources offered to all Brookhaven College students.
