Helping You Ensure Your Success!

Today more than ever, basic skills in reading, writing and studying are critical to success in academic settings and business life. Nationwide studies and government commissions note that all levels of employees will soon be expected to read and comprehend diverse materials. Everyone needs the ability to communicate clearly, fluently and effectively in writing.

Since the college opened in 1977, we have observed that right at the beginning of challenging academic programs, many students benefit greatly from an “edge” or “boost” in reading and writing. We realize skills may have become rusty and need polishing. Today’s students may need a refresher to perform well academically.

No matter what career you pursue, you will need to read and write well. Reading and writing go hand in hand; they have so much in common. One student said it was “sort of like yin and yang.” Much national research shows that students improve skills and progress faster when reading and writing are taught together, as we do in our Developmental Studies courses.

Reading and writing are integral to most college classes, so we want you to advance through the developmental classes as rapidly as you can. You will have excellent teachers who are highly educated and trained to help you apply skills learned in Developmental Studies to your other subjects as well. Yes, it is a time commitment, but you’re not alone. Almost 40 percent of Texas college students take some sort of developmental instruction.

When applying for admission to Brookhaven College, all students take either the TSI exam or other nationally standardized assessment tests. Scores earned on these tests reflect the student’s current skill level in reading and writing. An advisor will let you know which course level is appropriate for you.

The Developmental Studies program is designed to meet you “where you are.” Our reading, writing and study skills courses provide the instruction and practice to improve basic skills. Each course is three hours of college credit. Even though Developmental Studies credits are not transferrable outside the Dallas County Community College District, the benefits will stay with you for a lifetime!
