The Child Development/Early Childhood Department houses three programs: Child Development, Teacher Preparation and Learning Framework (EDUC 1300). The CDEC program location adjoins the Head Start Building, Bldg. E; located at the east side entrance.

Brookhaven College’s Child Development Department offers different tracks that prepare students for the fields of Child Development, Early Childhood Education and Education. The foundational knowledge and skills acquired in each program are critical to becoming a true master of the art and science of teaching. Students will excel with help from the programs' core of experienced faculty who have a wide breadth of knowledge in the field and focus on YOU as the learner. Students who pursue the Associate of Arts in Teaching will be prepared to transfer to the university level and pursue a teaching certificate. Students should work closely with an advisor when planning to transfer to a university.
Child Development offers an Associate in Applied Science that can be transferred to a four-year university and provides a firm grounding in the area of child development and early childhood.
We offer two Level 1 certificates that provide training to someone who has a degree wants to enter the field OR to those starting a career in the field who hopes to gain marketable skills for employment. The two certificates are the Teaching Careers Certificate and the Administrative Certificate.

Brookhaven offers low-cost and top quality child care workshops provided through the Workforce and Continuing Education Division. Our trainers meet the Texas Department of Child Care Licensing Department’s criterion of trainers for CEUs (Continuing Education Units).
