Brookhaven College paramedic students will perform vehicle extrication using the Jaws-of-Life and cutting tools to remove simulated patients from cars donated by Graham’s Wrecker Service. Students learn how to function wearing full personal protective equipment that is bulky, cumbersome and hot while removing a critically injured trauma victim from a wrecked vehicle. Tools, equipment and expertise have been supplied by Farmers Branch and Flower Mound fire departments.
Afterwards, flight crews from PHI or CareFlite Air Ambulance Services will land and educate paramedic students on the calling-for and preparation-for landing of a helicopter ambulance.
Brookhaven College paramedic students will travel to a local adventure park for a full day of exercises designed to simulate finding and recovering a “downed pilot” who is injured and lost in the wilderness. Creeks and gullies will need to be crossed and the pilot must be kept alive using knowledge and skills learned in the Paramedic Program until he has been safely taken to the hospital.
