BROOKHAVEN NURSING PROGRAM INFORMATION

Nursing is a highly specialized profession that is valued and respected in the community. Research indicates that nurses are trusted more than any other professional! Brookhaven College is seeking the most qualified applicants for admission to its program. The faculty members believe that the admission process and requirements provide the foundation for preparing students to be successful in this program.

Brookhaven College’s Associate Degree Nursing Program is a 72-credit hour, five semester (including summer) block curriculum leading to an Associate of Applied Science Degree. Upon successful graduation, the graduate is eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses, commonly referred to as the NCLEX-RN.

Our program began in Fall, 2004 and has exceptional outcomes with high retention rates and excellent nursing board scores.

Mountain View College's next application class will be for Fall 2009. Upon completion of the Nursing Program, Mountain View College nursing students will receive their degree from Brookhaven College.

The Nursing Program is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accreditation Commission and the Texas Board of Nursing. We are proud of our program and hope that you will apply.

The Brookhaven College Nursing Program accepts approximately 40 students, fall and spring of each year. The Mountain View College site accepts approximately 40 students once per year.

BROOKHAVEN NURSING PROGRAM'S MISSION

The Brookhaven College Associate Degree Nursing Program supports the mission of Brookhaven College and is dedicated to student success. The program is committed to preparing a caring, competent, professional nurse who is a successful practitioner, providing holistic care to a diverse population in an urban setting.

BROOKHAVEN NURSING PROGRAM'S PHILOSOPHY

Nursing

Professional nursing is a dynamic and interactive process that views the client, family, and community holistically. Nursing integrates both the fine art of caring and scientific knowledge within an ethical and legal framework. Nursing uses high-level technical skills and critical thinking to assist in health promotion, disease prevention and management across the life span, and the care of the dying client. Nursing processes are the framework by which nurses think critically, use decision making skills and provide competent care. The nurse-client relationship is a therapeutic alliance that values communication, concern and respect. The role of the nurse is defined as provider of care, coordinator of care and member of the profession. Nurses assume accountability and responsibility for professional behaviors and practice. Nursing fosters life-long learning through continuing education and critical inquiry, ensuring the safety and well-being of the client, family and community. The nurse is a patient advocate and cares for a diverse client population.

Nursing Education

The foundation of nursing education is derived from scientific and humanistic principles. The educational nursing environment supports and promotes the growth and autonomy of individual students as beginning practitioners and life-long learners. Empowering and nurturing students encourages adult learning. We believe that learning occurs most effectively when competent educators assume the role of facilitators during the teaching-learning process and partner with students and other health care professionals. These adult learners may need some direction to be responsible for their own learning as they move from pedagogy to andragogy. Holistic educators who demonstrate genuineness, compassion, empathy and respect for the student best model professionalism and inspire the learner. Diversity of the student population adds to the richness of the learning environment with all its experiences. Cultural competence is integral and strategic to a successful nursing college education.

Expectations of Our Graduates

The graduates of the Brookhaven College Associate Degree Nursing Program will be prepared to:

Acceptance to the Associate Degree Nursing Program is based on a point system.

Program Information

The following information explains other requirements and expectations of the Nursing Program.

Drug Screening and Criminal Background Checks

Students accepted into the Brookhaven College or Mountain View Nursing Program are required by the Dallas-Fort Worth Hospital Council member facilities to undergo a criminal background check and drug testing prior to beginning their clinical experience.

These procedures are conducted after a student has been accepted to the Nursing Program. Results of these screenings are forwarded to the dean of nursing at Brookhaven College for review and verification that a student is eligible to attend a clinical rotation. Students are responsible for all charges incurred.

The cost is approximately $85 for both of these screenings and is subject to change.

NOTE: Should a student who has been accepted to the Brookhaven College Nursing Program be prohibited from attending a clinical rotation experience due to findings of a criminal-background check and/or drug screening, the student may be dismissed from the Brookhaven College Nursing Program.

Drug Screen

A clinical agency reserves the right to remove a student from the facility for suspicion of drug or alcohol use. The clinical agency reserves the right to request that a student submit to a repeat drug screening at the student’s expense on the same day that the student is removed from the clinical facility.

Failure to comply will result in the student’s immediate expulsion from the clinical facility.

Furthermore, regardless of testing or testing results, clinical agencies reserve the right to expel students from their facilities.

The drug screen follows National Institute on Drug Abuse guidelines and screens for 10 substances, as designated in the Substance Abuse Panel 10, “SAP 10.”

These substances are: amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cocaine metabolites, marijuana metabolites, methadone, opiates, phencyclidine, and propoxyphene.

SAP 10 test results that fall outside of any of the acceptable ranges are considered positive test results and are automatically sent for a separate confirmatory test by a gas chromotography mass spectrometry method. If these results are positive, the test results are sent to a medical review officer who will review the results at an additional cost of $25-75 to the student. The medical review officer will then contact the student to determine if there is a valid prescription for the drug in question. If a valid prescription exists and is verified, the test result will be deemed negative and acceptable.

An individual with a positive drug screen will not be allowed to enroll in any nursing courses for a minimum of 12 months. If an individual is drug tested while in the nursing program, they will not be allowed to attend any clinical agency/rotation for a minimum of 12 months. Prior to enrolling or returning to the clinical agency/rotation, a student must provide proof of a negative drug screen as verified by the college/school.

Criminal Background Check

The criminal-background check reviews a person’s criminal history at least seven years prior to the date of program application. The check will include all cities and counties of the person’s residency during that time period. The following histories will disqualify an individual from consideration for a clinical rotation:

  • felony convictions;
  • misdemeanor convictions or felony deferred adjudications involving crimes against persons, e.g. physical or sexual abuse;
  • misdemeanor convictions related to moral turpitude, e.g. prostitution, public lewdness/exposure, etc.;
  • felony deferred adjudications for the sale, possession, distribution, or transfer of narcotics or controlled substances; or
  • registered sex offender.

Exception: If a licensing/registry body, e.g. the Texas Board of Nursing approves the individual to take the licensing/credentialing exam, the individual may participate in the clinical portion of the Nursing Program. (See Texas Board of Nursing information below)

However, even with approval from a licensing/registry body, each clinical facility reserves the right to deny access to a student with a criminal background or positive drug screen. In this event, a student may be dismissed from the Nursing Program.

Back to top

Texas Board of Nursing

The Texas Board of Nursing regulates the Brookhaven College associate degree program and the extension campus at Mountain View College.

Prior to graduation, students enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing Program are

responsible for providing the board with a legible set of fingerprint cards for the criminal-background process. The Board will not approve a nursing candidate to take the NCLEX-RN® examination or authorize the individual to practice as a graduate nurse without a valid criminal-background report. Individuals whose fingerprint cards are rejected by Texas Department of Public Safety and the Federal Bureau of Investigation will be required to resubmit new sets of cards until a set that meets criteria for DPS/FBI is submitted and processed. The board cannot accept criminal-background reports that were originated or submitted though other organizations. All criminal background reports must be submitted through the BNE to DPS/FBI.”

Prior to admission to the Nursing program, the student is required to meet the criteria for initial licensure eligibility. If a student has an eligibility issue with the Board of Nursing, the student must submit a petition for Declaratory Order to the Board of Nursing before entering the Nursing Program. A copy of the Declaratory order is to be given to the Dean of Nursing prior to the application deadline.

Back to top

Liability Insurance

All nursing students, once admitted, will be required to purchase professional liability insurance. Students cannot attend clinical without professional liability insurance. The cost will be announced in Success Camp and in class.

Back to top

Social Security Numbers

Clinical opportunities are not available for students without Social Security numbers. Students must have a social security number at the time that they apply for admission to the nursing program. International students are advised to contact the Brookhaven College Multicultural Center, Building S, Room S136, or Mountain View College international advisor, Building W, Room 139, concerning this requirement.

Social Security status will be verified by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) prior to taking the N-CLEX exam. This number is also used by some hospitals in the Dallas Fort Worth Hospital District as identification to allow nursing students to chart on patient legal documents.

If you do not have a Social Security number by Success Camp week, you will be asked to withdraw.

Back to top

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, CPR, Requirements

Prior to beginning the Nursing Program, all students must be certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, commonly referred to as CPR, at the Healthcare Provider level as designated by the American Heart Association. A copy of a current CPR card MUST be submitted during Success Camp. Students must recertify each year they are in the program, regardless of whether their initial certification was effective for one or two years.

CPR courses are available through the Brookhaven College Workforce and Continuing Education Division and the Mountain View College Continuing Education Department. See the course schedule for details. CPR training also is available through the American Heart Association, American Red Cross, various hospitals and many other agencies.

Back to top

Medical Insurance Coverage Requirements

All students in the Nursing Program are required to present proof of medical insurance. Please bring your insurance coverage information to Success Camp for verification. Insurance provider information is available on the Dallas County Community College District Web page: https://www1.dcccd.edu/catalog/ss/sd/insurance.cfm

If you have any questions, please contact the Nursing Program Office at Brookhaven or Mountain View colleges.

Back to top

Immunization Requirements

The Texas Department of State Health Services requires that all students enrolled in health professions programs who are exposed to blood and body fluid must have COMPLETED the Hepatitis B series prior to direct patient care. The series includes three injections and must be started PRIOR to your submitting your application to the Nursing Program because it requires a 4-6 month administration timeframe. The Hepatitis B series MUST be completed before beginning clinical rotations-NO EXCEPTIONS. Students without complete immunizations will be administratively dropped from the program.

The student is responsible for providing documentation of all immunizations to the nursing secretary by the first day of success camp.

Other REQUIRED proof of completed immunizations and tests include:

Documentation of a titer with specific lab values verifying immunity or seropositivity are also acceptable for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Hepatitis B and Varicella.

Back to top

Physical Exam

A current physical examination is needed for admission into the Associate Degree Nursing Program. The medical forms and immunization records include a medical history, physical exam and current, required immunizations. These forms are available in the nursing offices at Brookhaven and Mountain View colleges. The completed forms are submitted during Success Camp.

Once a student is accepted to the Nursing Program, all medical documents submitted will become property of the Nursing Program and will not be returned or photocopied for the student.

Sudden illnesses, pregnancy, injuries and other emergency medical conditions that prevent a student from attending clinical laboratory sessions will be handled by the dean of nursing. A signed statement regarding the condition may be required from a physician.

Back to top

Transportation

Students are responsible for their transportation arrangements to campus, field trips and to assigned health care facilities for clinical experience. Clinical assignments may vary from semester to semester or within the semester.

Back to top

Financial Aid

Students should contact the Scholarships/Financial Aid Office at Brookhaven College or Mountain View College for application forms, filing procedures and deadlines. A number of area hospitals offer financial assistance to students pursuing health care careers. For a listing of those hospitals with contact information, application procedures, etc., please contact the Dallas-Fort Worth Hospital Council at 972-719-4900 to obtain their scholarship booklet.

American With Disabilities Act, ADA

The Americans with Disabilities Act, or ADA, of 1990 was enacted by Congress to prohibit discrimination against qualified individuals with disabilities. Schools of nursing, like other state- and federally-funded entities, are required to comply with the stipulations of the ADA. The ADA defines a qualified individual as an individual with a disability who, with or without reasonable accommodations, can perform the essential functions of the employment position that such individual holds or desires. In addition, the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 prohibits discrimination in admissions of a qualified person with disabilities.

ADA and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 eligibility requirements vary depending on the type of services, activities and functions needed in particular areas. Because the practice of nursing is an applied discipline that uses cognitive, sensory, affective and psychomotor elements, students must be able to perform the functions that are necessary for the safe practice of nursing. Admission is based on a complete packet being submitted including signed course substitutions. A mathematical formula is used to compute the applicant’s score. After the application deadline, all applicant scores will be calculated. The applicants with the top scores will be identified.

The following factors determine the score:

  1. 2.75 is the minimum grade point average for the four prerequisite courses in the nursing curriculum. (See GPA calculator)
  2. Minimum grade of “C” or better is required in every course, including each prerequisite course.
  3. No points given for the four prerequisites.
  4. One point each is given for fine Arts/humanities elective/Developmental Psychology, Language course, Dosage Calculation, and Death and Dying.
  5. Two points each for Microbiology, Anatomy and Physiology II, Pathophysiology, and Pharmacology.
  6. HESI A2™ exam points based on the HESI A2™ exam (minimum score on HESI A2™ exam is 75).
    HESI A2™ points = HESI A2™ score - 75
  7. Review Points: Applicants who have previously applied and met admission requirements, but were not accepted will be given an additional three (3) points towards admission.
  8. Total points are calculated by the following formula:
    GPA + HESI A2™ points + Course points + Review points

Note: The HESI A2™ exam MUST be taken at Brookhaven College, Mountain View College, El Centro College or North Lake College. Students may retake the HESI A2 ™ during an admission cycle each year. The most CURRENT score will be used. HESI A2™TM scores are good for two years. Brookhaven College or Mountain View College will not mail scores to any other college.

Calculating Your Grade Point Average

Your grade point average, GPA, is calculated by dividing the total amount of grade points earned by the total amount of credit hours attempted. Your grade point average may range from 0.0 to a 4.0.
For example:
A=4 grade points
B=3 grade points
C=2 grade points
I (Incompletes) and W (Withdrawals) do not receive grade points and do not have an effect on the GPA
