Lady Bears Take Fourth Title at Volleyball Championship
Nov. 16, 2009
It seems that coach Jason Hopkins is building a dynasty with the Brookhaven College Lady Bears volleyball team. Over the weekend the team won their second straight national championship, their fourth title in the past six years in the National Junior College Athletics Association Division III. The 2009 NJCAA Division III Volleyball Tournament was Nov. 13-14 at the University Center Rochester Sports Center in Rochester, Minn.
Brookhaven College won their latest title by defeating tournament newcomer Madison Area Technical College in four games, 22-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-19. Madison had defeated top-ranked Rock Valley College, Rockville, Ill., to get into the tournament.
Three Bears players-Katie Schlup, Chelcy Trejo and Sarah Terry-were named to the All Tournament Team and Callie Martin was named Most Valuable Player. Hopkins was named as Coach of the Year.
The team started their season ranked No. 1, and entered the tournament as the top seed, with a perfect record in division play throughout the year. The Lady Bears finished 29-10 overall.

Lady Bears Raise $1,800 with Dig Pink
Oct. 26, 2009
In support of breast cancer research, the Lady Bears Volleyball Team at Brookhaven College had a Side-Out Foundation “Dig Pink” game Oct. 15. The event proved to be a success, raising $800 above the team’s original goal of $1,000.
All week prior to the match, the team sold pink t-shirts and handed out flyers to the campus in efforts to promote the match and what it was all about.
Though Brookhaven College won the conference match-up against Cedar Valley College in three straight sets, the real victory that night belonged to breast cancer survivors.
Following the second set, Dr. Richard McCrary, interim president, announced the names of survivors present at the match, while the Lady Bears handed out pink roses.
“I’ve never seen our gym so packed,” said head coach Jason Hopkins. “I’m so proud of the team for putting all they had into reaching their goal for the match.”
The game began with both teams trading their school colors for pink. Players were also given a pink carnation to give to a loved one in the audience.
The Lady Bears prepared for and promoted the fundraiser by selling pink T-shirts and distributing fliers to students on campus.
Hopkins and several of the players’ parents also hosted a bake sale to raise money for the cause. The big hits were cookies, Rice Krispie crispy treats, brownies and cup cakes, according to Hopkins.
Freshman Heather O’Bier’s mother was credited for making the bake sale a huge success, while freshman Brandi Barber’s parents made pink candles especially for the match.
The college expects to hold the event annually.

Lady Bears go 4-0 at Vernon Invite
Sept. 5, 2009
Vernon, Texas — The No. 1-ranked Division III Brookhaven College Lady Bears went undefeated in the Vernon College
Invitational on Labor Day weekend, making their record 8-1.
The victory marks the second tournament of the season in which Brookhaven has gone undefeated, the first being the Lady
Bears Invitational held Aug. 28-29.
On Sept. 4, Brookhaven played Division I Clarendon College and defeated the Lady Bulldogs 3-0. They outlasted Division I
team North Central Texas College for a 3-2 victory.
On Sept. 5, the Lady Bears squared off with Division I Western Texas College for the second time of the season and ended
with similar results, defeating the Westerners 3-1. The second match of the day saw the Bears defeat the Division II
Hesston College Lady Larks 3-0 to claim a share of the tournament championship with host school Vernon College.
Lady Bears head coach Jason Hopkins said he was impressed with his team’s consistency.
“The team played pretty consistent this weekend,” Hopkins said. “It’s never easy to win on the
road, but we played like we were right at home. I’ve seen a lot of improvement this weekend and that’s what
our goal was.
“I’m very pleased with our sophomore captains. They’ve done an excellent job of keeping everyone on task
and leading by example. They really are the building blocks of this team and it showed on the court this weekend.”

No. 1 Brookhaven wins Lady Bears Invitational
Aug. 29, 2009
The Brookhaven College Lady Bears opened NJCAA play this season with a 4-0 record and a tournament championship at their own
Lady Bears Invitational in Farmers Branch.
The Lady Bears, the No. 1-ranked team and defending NJCAA DIII National Champions, hosted all Division I teams. The Bears
defeated Ranger College 3-0 and Paris Junior College 3-0 on Aug. 28. On Aug. 29, Brookhaven defeated Western Texas College
3-1 and swept No. 23 Hill College 3-0 for the tournament championship.
For their efforts, three Lady Bears were selected to the All-Tournament Team: sophomore outside hitter Chelcy Trejo (John Horn
High; Mesquite, Texas) and Preseason First Team All-American sophomore setter Callie Martin (Royce City High; Royce City,
Texas.) Freshmen middle blocker Sarah Terry (Richardson High; Garland, Texas) garnered the Most Valuable Player award for the
All-Tournament team.
Bears head coach Jason Hopkins was pleased with the tournament results.
“We have hosted this tournament for six years now,” Hopkins said. “This is the first time we were actually
able to keep the trophy!
“The team played very well with each other. I have 13 on my roster, and I can honestly say that this is the deepest
we’ve ever been at Brookhaven. I never had to use a set lineup. I tossed six on the floor true to position, and they
made it happen from there. Playing time was very equal among all, so it truly feels like a ‘team’ victory.”
