Brookhaven College
The Bears volleyball team is under the direction of Jason Hopkins, who is entering his
sixth season as the head women’s volleyball coach. A former assistant coach at Brookhaven College in 2003,
Hopkins took over the program in 2004 when the college would see its first-ever NJCAA National Championship,
in any athletic program. In 2005, the Bears repeated as national champions and most recently won the 2008
Division III National Championship.
Hopkins has coached his teams to five consecutive NJCAA National Championship Final-Four appearances en route
to being crowned as National Champions in 2004, 2005 and 2008. The Bears have won five consecutive Metro
Athletic Conference Championships, with three undefeated seasons in 2006, 2007 and 2008, as well as
five consecutive NJCAA Region V tournament championships under Hopkins’ leadership.
Coach Hopkins, the “winningest” coach in Brookhaven College volleyball history, has been selected three times
as the NJCAA DIII National Coach of the Year and five times as the NJCAA Region V Coach of the
Year. Hopkins has coached nine NJCAA DIII All-Americans, 16 NJCAA Region V selections,
33 All-Metro Athletic Conference picks, one AVCA All-American, six NJCAA Academic All-Americans
and three NJCAA DIII National Tournament MVP’s.
During the summer months, Coach Hopkins serves as a volleyball camp clinician as well as a coaches clinic
speaker. He has coached USA Junior Olympic volleyball for eight years in Texas. Hopkins grew up in Saranac,
Michigan, where he started his career playing Junior Olympic volleyball. He served as the girl’s volleyball
team student assistant, serving under head coaches, Joni Keskey and Karen Roher. He then went on to Lansing
Community College and started the men’s volleyball club team and served as a student assistant to the
women’s volleyball team under the guidance of Mary Jo Hardy. Hopkins is an active member of the American
Volleyball Coaches Association and a USA Volleyball IMPACT certified coach as well as a CAPS LEVEL I certified
coach.
Outside of coaching, Hopkins also spends time in the gym as a player. He participates in leagues in the Dallas area
and enjoys watching other teams play. “I have to admit,” says Hopkins, “I’m a sucker
for volleyball. I would have a hard time not having something to do with it on a day to day basis. I love this
game and the people I’ve met along the way. My players, ex-teammates, colleagues and my own coaches, have
molded me into the coach and player I am today.”
