Our Reputation
Brookhaven College’s English for Speakers of Other
Languages programs have been modeled by other schools in the
United States and abroad. Part of our success is due to the quality
of our faculty. Their enthusiasm and expertise are a product of their
many years of teaching in six continents and studying the English language, innovative methodologies and cultural differences.
Credit Course Descriptions
The transferable college credit courses in the ESOL program are tailored for students who wish to improve their English in preparation for a college degree. The 16-course program covers each of the four language skill areas of listening/speaking, reading, writing and grammar through a four-level curriculum. Multicultural reading selections, westernized critical
thinking, rhetorical modes, process writing, proofreading and oral presentations
are addressed in each level. The curriculum also coordinates instruction with other ESOL programs and with developmental studies or college-level programs throughout the Dallas County Community College District. After reaching sufficient English proficiency,
students may enroll in other content courses offered at Brookhaven College or at
other colleges and universities.
To enter the credit ESOL program, first take an English placement test, then meet with a specially trained academic advisor to discuss your test results and be placed in a course or courses to fit your needs. You also may call or e-mail the World Languages Division office for assistance with this process.
The Brookhaven College Catalog online provides official course description information by skill area - Listening/Speaking, Reading, Writing and Grammar - and by individual courses.
Credit and Noncredit Courses

Students interested in the ESOL Program are
strongly encouraged to watch this three-minute
video, which thoroughly explains the program
in English and in Spanish. Watch the video here.
The ESOL program also has noncredit courses covering eight levels. It is open to anyone wanting to improve their English skills for personal or professional growth. The focus is on developing communicative
competence ranging from a beginner level (little or no language skill)
to an advanced level. After completing the third level of the noncredit program, students may qualify
to enroll in the credit ESOL program.
