Introduction

This first edition of the Instructional Research Review hails the beginning of an initiative included in Brookhaven College’s Title III Grant. What makes this initiative more significant, however, is that the allocated Instructional Research staff and the instructional processes developed will be institutionalized to benefit Brookhaven College faculty and staff as they continue to respond to the needs of the changing student population our college serves.

The Title III Grant focuses on “Improving academic and student support programs for high-risk students,” and contains two key components:

  1. Instructional Research

The development of capacity to conduct assessments of performance at the micro level in our college courses and programs coupled with student learning style assessment and tracking of progress is the foundation of the approach to solving issues related to increased student success.

  2. An Integrated High-Risk Student Support consisting of

    1. One or more remote Student Support Referral
    2. CentersTeaching Strategies
    3. Curriculum Development

This component includes redesigning/ expanding existing academic and student support services plus development of alternative learning options, new ways to utilize faculty resources, and creation of faculty development tools for both full-time and adjunct faculty in the areas of high risk students and support services.
