| The Lifetime Learning
program is for people who are taking job-related courses. It is designed
to give you a tax benefit for classes that improve your current job skills
or for classes where you learn new job skills if you take classes at a
qualified educational institution, such as Brookhaven College. Up to 20
percent of $5,000 of your qualifying expenses, up to a maximum credit
of $1,000, is covered by the Lifetime Learning Credit. A taxpayer, or
a taxpayer and spouse, may claim a maximum of $1,000 on a tax return,
no matter how many people in the family are receiving qualifying education.
Qualifying expenses include tuition and required fees for the course of
study. Optional fees, such as student activity fees, do not qualify. For
