Reduced Lighting and New Gates at Brookhaven College Will Stop Traffic
Farmers Branch, Texas - Newly installed gates at the two entrances to Brookhaven College will stop all vehicular traffic between 11:30 p.m. and 6 a.m. beginning Sept. 2.
Both the entrance and exit lanes, located at 3939 Valley View Lane and at the intersection of Alpha and McEwen roads, will be blocked to help increase security during the hours that lighting on the campus is at a minimum. The decision to reduce lighting was made recently to reduce utility costs while college administrators face the 2003-2004 fiscal year that begins Sept. 1 with declining state funding for higher education.
Brookhaven College's first day of fall classes held 10,525 students--an 8.67 percent increase over the college's record enrollment in fall 2002. The final headcount this fall, which is taken on the 12th class day, of students taking credit courses is expected to be about 11,000, with another 3,500 students taking noncredit courses through the Corporate and Continuing Education Division.
The college's first classes of the day convene at 7:30 a.m. and last classes are dismissed at 9:50 p.m.
During Brookhaven College's fall convocation Aug. 21, President Alice Villadsen emphasized the need this year to look for every possible source to reduce costs as state funding for higher education continues to drop. Twenty years ago funding from the state provided more than 74 percent of the Dallas County Community College District's budget. In 2002, state funding accounted for only 40.3 percent of the budget and figures show this trend will continue.
