Volleyball Takes Team to National Championship

Farmers Branch, Dallas, TX  • The Brookhaven College Lady Bears Volleyball Team won the National Junior College Athletics Association Division III National Women's Volleyball Championships. This is the first national championship title for any BHC team in the school's 25 year history.

Natasha Nguyen was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. The NJCAA selected Angela Rumbo, Lady Bears Volleyball team captain as the 2004 Division III volleyball All-American. Team members Rumbo, Courtney Gerrish and Lauren Gunderson were named to the All-Tournament Team. Rumbo finished the year ranked number three in the nation in kills per game, Nguyen was number 10 in the nation in assists per game and Gerrish was ranked number 11 in blocks per game.

This is the first year for Jason Hopkins, head coach at Brookhaven College. He was recognized as the Coach of the Tournament.

Four team members are graduates of Poteet High School in Mesquite, Rumbo, Nguyen, Gunderson and Melina Figuero. Team member Courtney Gerrish is a graduate of Azle High School, Kelsey Creech is a graduate of W.T. White High School in Dallas and Amber Hoffman is a graduate of Clifton High School in Clifton, Texas.
