FARMERS BRANCH/DALLAS • Brookhaven College's newest program is for its smallest students yet. Musikgarten classes beginning in February will offer programs for children beginning with newborns as part of the School of the Arts-Arts Academy. Musikgarten courses teach music, art and movement to children and their parents.

Musical, physical, emotional, social and cognitive growth are all benefits of offering young children classes in music and art. Four different six-week courses cater to children from newborns to 5 years.

MUSIKGARTEN I - Family Music for Babies, has music and play activities for newborns to 18-month-old babies and a caregiver. The cost is $42 for each student, an additional one-time supply cost includes the parent book, CD, and baby instrument kit.

  • Thursdays 1-1:30 p.m. Feb. 17, 24 and March 3, 10, 17, and 24
  • Saturdays 10-10:30 a.m. Feb. 19, 26 and March 5, 12, 19, 26

MUSIKGARTEN II - Family Music for Toddlers is for children 16 months to 3½ years old, along with a caregiver. It includes singing, dancing and playing simple musical instruments. The course is $42 per student, an additional one-time supply cost includes the parent book, CD, and baby instrument kit.

  • Thursdays 2-2:30 p.m. Feb. 17, 24 and March 3, 10, 17, and 24
  • Saturdays 11-11:30 a.m. Feb. 19, 26 and March 5, 12, 19, 26

MUSIKGARTEN III - Cycle of Seasons, for ages 3 to 5 years features music, listening and musical games for children and a caregiver. The cost is $60 for each student, an additional one-time supply cost of $22 includes the parent book, CD, and cards.

  • Thursdays 3-3:45 p.m. Feb. 17, 24 and March 3, 10, 17, and 24
  • Saturdays Noon -12:45 p.m. Feb. 19, 26 and March 5, 12, 19, 26

MUSIKGARTEN V - Music and Art, combines art and music for children ages 3 to 5 years. Taught by a music teacher and an art teacher, the course combines both art forms. Children attend this class without a caregiver. The cost for the program is $120 per student an additional one-time supply cost of $22 includes the parent book, CD, and cards.

  • Wednesdays 12:30-2 p.m. Feb. 16, 23; March 2, 16, and 30; and April 6

Supplies are required for each of the Musikgarten courses and can be obtained from the Follett bookstore at Brookhaven College before the first class meeting.
