New Sports Institute Offers Certification Programs at Brookhaven College
FARMERS BRANCH/DALLAS • From basketball, to skiing, from NASCAR to the Kentucky Derby, sports are big business in the United States and around the world. Students who want to be a part of the sports industry have a unique opportunity with the certificate programs in the Corporate and Continuing Education Division’s Sports Institute.
The Sports Institute offers students two different programs. The Sports Management Certification focuses on preparing professionals and students for careers as agents, administrators or managers in athletic, health or country clubs, and professional athletic organizations. The program prepares students for diverse roles in the areas of sports, facility management, planning, activity programming and event management.
A certificate program for Tourism, Leisure and Sports Management focuses on the interaction between sports and tourism. The program promotes student skills in creating development plans, organizing sports tours and facilitating programs for hotel and resort settings.
The sports business industry is one of the largest and fastest growing industries in the United States, according to Street & Smith’s Sports Business Journal. The publication’s annual industry survey estimated the sports industry last year at $213 billion. It is far more than twice the size of the U.S. auto industry and seven times the size of the movie industry.
For students who want to discover more, and for professionals who want to focus their skills, the certification programs offer hands-on training in the sports industry. Big name teams and sports organizations in the Metroplex like the Dallas Mavericks, International United Soccer Club, Lama’s Sport Marketing and the Addison Athletic Club are some of the organizations offering internship opportunities to the program’s students.
