Arts Academy Offers New Courses for Kids
FARMERS BRANCH/DALLAS • Finding activities for children can be a challenge for any parent, but those who are resourceful know that community colleges have a lot to offer. Along with athletic and academic programs, Brookhaven College has created an Arts Academy that has courses just for kids.
Musikgarten offers music courses for children as young as newborns. Musikgarten courses are six-week programs meeting once per week that the child and a caregiver can attend together. Depending on the children's ages, the different courses become progressively longer, developing more in-depth musical experiences for the older children. For smaller children the courses include activities like physical rocking and peek-a-boo games for the newborns and infants, and playing simple musical instruments for toddlers. The courses become more encompassing, offering activities such as musical games and storytelling, for pre-school age children and playing instruments and performing ensemble work for school-age children.
Private music lessons and music appreciation and theory courses have been added for the summer schedule. Beginning in June, the Arts Academy will have private lessons in piano, guitar, violin, flute, clarinet and percussion instruments for children beginning at age 6. The music appreciation and theory courses are being offered in June, July and August for children 6 to 18 years old. Piano and chamber music courses also are offered for intermediate or advanced students who want the experience of working with other musicians.
Older children can also design their own "camp" experience by choosing from a variety of art, music, foreign language and karate courses. There is a menu of 15 courses that include subjects such as Chamber Music, Ceramics, Folk Art for Children, Spanish, French and Italian. The courses are priced individually so that families can decide which programs to combine to fit both their schedule and budget.
