For Immediate Release
DALLAS • The Vocal Jazz Ensemble at Brookhaven College rounded out their year with a successful trip to Mexico. The 10-member, singing group and five-member Jazz Ensemble traveled to the University of Guanajuato in Guanajuato, Mexico for the Festival Cultural Universitario Y Feria del Libro.
In addition to the festival performance, the ensemble’s concert was filmed for one of the national television stations in Mexico. Elaine Gardner-Morales, ensemble director and music professor, and Octavio Gutierrez, music professor and keyboard ensemble director were both interviewed. Gutierrez is from Guanajuato and he returned for the festival with two of his piano students.
From standing ovations to autograph sessions, the ensemble was very well received at the event, which featured dozens of groups from the United States and Mexico. The group left for Mexico just hours after performing in the Addison Jazz Festival. Two vocalists in the group, Britni Duwuii and Darryl Raven, and one of the ensemble’s musicians, Christopher Pinson, all received outstanding solo awards at the festival.
The Vocal Jazz Ensemble has traveled to Ireland, the Dominican Republic, England and to Mexico on several occasions since its inception in 1989.
