Careers Week Focuses on Geospatial Technology

DALLAS – Careers in geospatial technology are in the spotlight with a special focus on this growing career field, at Brookhaven College, Feb. 26-March 1. The Career Development Center has compiled career resources and coordinated guest speakers for students and community members interested in a career in geospatial technology. The U. S. Department of Labor identified geographic information technology as one of the three most important emerging fields along with nanotechnology and biotechnology. Estimates for the growth of this industry have projected the market for GIS at $10 billion for 2005, with a $30 billion market for all geospatial technologies.

• Feb. 26 from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. – An open house features a chance to speak with a career counselor and access resources offering job outlook, salary and training for careers in geospatial technology at the Career Development Center, located in the Student Services Center, Building S, Room S065.
• Feb. 27 from 10:30 a.m. noon – A special presentation “3-D Remote Sensing” by Dr. Carlos Aiken from the Center for Lithospheric Studies at the University of Texas at Dallas will focus on the acquisition and use of 3D photorealistic models for virtual field-trips and exercises in Building B, Room B304.
• Feb. 28 from 5-6 p.m. – Focusing on the hot careers and big salaries in geospatial technology, Dr. Stuart Murchison, assistant director of public works for the city of Dallas will speak to students and the public at the Ellison Miles Geotechnology Institute in Building H, Room H105.
• March 1 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. – The Ellison Miles Geotechnology Institute will host an open house.
• March 1 from 1-2 p.m. – Members of a Brookhaven College cross-functional team will present an integrated approach to teaching geospatial technology to students of all ages in “From Road Kill to Spatial Data Visualization: A Journey.”
