News at Brookhaven College

For Release through May 12

DALLAS – A unique summer course at Brookhaven College offers students the opportunity to apply classroom skills in the field with a trip to the Texas Gulf Coast. Introduction to Oceanography combines classroom and online instruction with a seven-day field trip to points along the Texas coast, June 16-23.

Students will study beaches in Galveston and at North Padre Island, learn about dredging on a boat tour of Port Aransas Harbor and get a behind-the-scenes glimpse of Sea World with a special tour. Waves, tides, pollution and water temperature are just some of the areas students will be able to investigate hands-on during the Gulf Coast tour. A unique learning experience for those looking for a summer science course, the course meets for one session in the classroom before the trip, and for one class after for review.

Taught by Durward Mommsen, former Navy oceanographer and Naval Academy instructor, the course is a full four-hour lab science course. The cost for the class is $900 plus standard tuition. The cost includes transportation, lodging and meals as well as entrance and tour costs. For additional information on the course or to register, contact the Brookhaven College Mathematics and Science Division at 972-860-4750.
