DALLAS – From building fences to digging ditches, employees and students at Brookhaven College joined forces to help a few Carrollton and Farmers Branch senior citizens to have safer, cleaner yards. The college coordinates a community service project and this year, teams completed a variety of work as part of the Group Home Repair Program. The program is in partnership with Senior Adult Services, which is a Metrocrest Social Services agency.
The Hispanic Heritage and Geology clubs, along with the Society for the Advancement of Management, all student groups, joined college employees to complete both simple and complex yard projects to help seniors meet code compliance. Many teams completed their projects with just a few hours of work on a single Saturday.
“Being able to come together as a college to serve in our community is something we are pleased and proud to do,” said Dr. Sharon L. Blackman, president of Brookhaven College . “Our students spend thousands of hours each semester working in the community through service-learning programs and many of our employees live and volunteer in our local community, but it was an amazing experience to bring these two groups together on a community service project.”
