DALLAS - The Brookhaven College's Head Start Center had a reception and orientation for 17 parents who will begin taking courses at Brookhaven College this spring. The Greater Texas Foundation donated funds while the Head Start Center was under construction to support higher education opportunities for parents with children who would be attending the facility located at Brookhaven College.
This spring semester, 17 parents will receive scholarship funds totaling more than $5,500, with awards ranging between $200-500. Students will be enrolling in both credit and noncredit programs; some are taking English for Speakers of Other Languages courses. This is the second set of parents receiving scholarships. In the fall, there were only four students who received scholarships and the 17 students this semester represent a 500 percent increase in participation.
Marilyn Kolesar Lynch, associate vice president of career and program resources, helped coordinate the orientation to offer the parents assistance with admissions, advising and financial aid. The parents have advisors and a financial aid specialist assisting them throughout the process.
“We are so proud of these parents, who are part of the community and have a connection at the college through their children’s attendance at the center,” said Lynch. “It is an honor to be able to offer this opportunity and service, and we appreciate that they’ve entrusted Brookhaven College with their education.”
