On June 8th, Brookhaven College was a proud sponsor of the Farmers Branch Chamber of Commerce 2010 Business & Career Expo. Sylvia Wise, workforce and continuing education coordinator, represented the college with a booth, and had the opportunity to network with representatives from dozens of local businesses. Shama Kabani, named as one of Business Week’s Top 25 Young Entrepreneurs, was the featured guest speaker at the event, which drew in a sizable crowd.
Facilities services staff at Brookhaven College is working hard to go green. Electrician José Martinez and master electrician Bo Honea recently completed a project to retrofit 84 free-standing walkway lights to allow the lights to operate with compact florescent bulbs. The conversion reduces the wattage used by the lights by almost 70 percent. They are in the midst of a second project which will extend the conversion to florescent lighting for an addition 159 campus wall-lights as well. The 70 percent savings should render about $16,200 per year in real dollars and a 12-month return on investment for the change over. To extend the savings, staff members plan to investigate upgrading some of the campuses canopy lighting to save even more.
