Release Date Aug. 27
To prove that poetry is worth an encore, the Communications Division, in conjunction with the Office of Student Life, is once again welcoming Joaquin Zihuatanejo to the stage.
Zihuatanejo, Individual World Poetry Slam champion and HBO Def Poet, will perform Sept. 4 at 10:30 a.m. in the Performance Hall for phase one of the Communications Division 2012 Fall Forum.
Students packed the house last year for Zihuatanejo, who used heart and humor to engage his audience into listening and laughing along. Born and raised in the barrio of East Dallas, he strives to capture the duality of the Chicano culture.
“He speaks about current issues and connects them in a way that makes you say, ‘Wow, that makes sense. I never thought of it that way,’” said Hazel Carlos, English professor and Fall Forum coordinator.
Inviting the poet champ back for a round two was an easy decision for Carlos. The college community asked for Zihuatanejo by name, she said.
The Fall Forum will culminate with a student Slam Poetry competition in May.
