Community Engagement - Approximately 500 students, teachers, parents and event observers attended the Global Elementary Model United Nations (GEMUN) at Brookhaven College, May 17-18th. For the seventh consecutive year, the college hosted the experiential learning program in which elementary and middle school students role-play United Nations delegates who represent their countries in two days of committee meetings. Based in Arlington, TX, GEMUN is one of only a few organizations worldwide to offer such an experience for young students. Delegations primarily represent schools from across North Texas, but students also traveled from Mexico, Russia and Taiwan to participate.
Employee Success - Dr. Thom Chesney, Brookhaven College president, has been appointed to the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) Commission on Academic, Student and Community Development. His three-year term on the commission begins July 1st. AACC commissions provide information and advice to the AACC Board and staff, encourage collaboration among community colleges and provide a forum for focused conversations about issues affecting community colleges.
The artwork of students of Brookhaven College painting instructor Hyun Chu has been on display at the Farmers Branch Manske Library. A native of Korea, Chu graduated from Seoul National University and earned a master’s degree in fine arts from Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia, PA. She has had 11 one-person shows and approximately 50 group shows around the world. Her artwork is displayed at The Museum of Fine Arts-Houston, Belo Corporation, Texas Instruments, Pizza Hut headquarters, a DART station and several other locations.
