News at Brookhaven College

Release Date Sept. 27

Employee Success - Donna Taylor and Andrea Bailey, Brookhaven College science learning lab coordinators, decided to find a way to fix a problem, using their final project for the Consortium Leadership And Renewal Academy (CLARA). CLARA is a yearlong regional leadership information, development and renewal program for employees at the member institutions of the North Texas Community College Consortium. Taylor and Bailey worked months creating a safety video specifically for college science labs, to replace an outdated, generic film that was being shown in classes. Creating the online tutorial piece - including humor to help engage the students - added valuable instruction time back into the classroom and has proved so popular that the division adopted it for widespread use.

On September 13th, 68 Brookhaven College faculty members volunteered their time and expertise to create program-level learning outcomes for the Associate in Arts and Associate in Sciences programs, to clearly distinguish one degree from the other. After identifying the curriculum differences, participants identified two program learning outcomes for students who complete the degrees. Because these outcomes are currently measured within courses, data can be collected to determine the degree to which students attain these skills. This work will assist Brookhaven College in satisfying reporting requirements and requests from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) to the general public.
