College is possible! Students who need financial assistance to attend college can apply for grants, scholarships, or job opportunities. You may even be eligible for the Rising Star program. Inquiries about financial aid should be made far in advance of the day you plan to register. The average time needed to process an application for financial assistance is two to three months. New students to the DCCCD must apply for Admission and financial aid at the same time. See guidelines below for when you should apply.

The first step in the application process is completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Assistance (FAFSA), available in the Financial Aid Office. You also can apply free with FAFSA on the web at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The student’s and/or parent’s income and asset information for the last tax year will be analyzed to determine eligibility for grants and student loan programs.

This new scholarship initiative essentially eliminates financial need as a barrier to higher education in Dallas County. The Rising Star program promises the youth of Dallas County that if they stay in high school, graduate, demonstrate a modest level of academic potential, and have specific financial need, the Dallas County Community College Foundation will guarantee them the opportunity to earn a two-year college education from any one of the seven Dallas County Community College District or the Bill J. Priest Institute for Economic Development.

The Hope Tax Credit, sometimes call the Hope Scholarship, may be available to eligible taxpayers for the first two years of post-secondary education. The credit covers 100 percent of tuition and fees, and 50 percent of the second $1,000 that you spend on tuition and fees during the qualified period. If you also receive financial aid, that aid will be deducted from your HOPE Tax Credit.
To be eligible, you must be enrolled in a degree, certificate or other program leading to a recognized education credential and you must be enrolled at least half time.

The Lifetime Learning program is for people who are taking job-related courses. It is designed to give you a tax benefit for classes that improve your current job skills or for classes where you learn new job skills if you take classes at a qualified educational institution, such as Brookhaven College.
Up to 20 percent of $5,000 of your qualifying expenses, up to a maximum credit of $1,000, is covered by the Lifetime Learning credit. A taxpayer, or a taxpayer and spouse, may claim a maximum of $1,000 on a tax return, no matter how many people in the family are receiving qualifying education. Qualifying expenses include tuition and required fees for the course of study. Optional fees, such as student activity fees, do not qualify. Located in Building L, the library houses more than 58,000 books, with full-text databases to current magazines and newspapers. The online library is available by going to www.dcccd.edu and clicking on “Library.” Accessing library resources at all seven DCCCD campuses is as easy as going online to the DCCCD Library Catalog and making your book request electronically. Books from other campuses are sent to Brookhaven College in two to three days. Visitors to the library can access information electronically by going online on one of the 30 computers available.
