Core Curriculum

Every Texas public college and university is required by Texas law to have a core curriculum of no less than 42 credit hours. Brookhaven College and the DCCCD have a core of 48 credit hours.

Students who wish to transfer from Brookhaven College to another Texas public college or university are highly encouraged to begin and complete the core within the DCCCD because the receiving institution must accept the Brookhaven College/DCCCD core in its entirety and substitute the Brookhaven College/DCCCD core for its own core requirements.

It is to the advantage of students to remain and complete the Brookhaven College/DCCCD core prior to transferring because of this guarantee that the core will transfer as a whole.

Students who take some of the Brookhaven College/DCCCD core but do not complete it are assured that core courses will transfer and apply to the receiving institution's core if that institution also requires the same course(s) within its own core requirements. Each student should work closely with a Brookhaven College advisor to ensure he or she is completing the courses needed for the core requirements. Students have various options to demonstrate core curriculum competencies through credit-by-exam, CLEP, etc.

Receiving institutions have the right to determine if they will accept grades of D as meeting the core requirements. Students wishing to transfer are encouraged to make a grade of no less than C in any core course.

In addition, care should be taken in the selection of math and science courses as some universities have specific math and/or science courses which will apply to the choice of major fields of study.

There are a number of ways a student may demonstrate that he or she already possesses the competencies taught in core courses. Among these are the successful completion of an instructor-made exam or successful completion of the appropriate CLEP or DANTES exam (visit the Testing Center for a current list of such tests).

TRANSFER INFORMATION

Brookhaven College/Dallas County Community College District Guarantee For Transfer Credit

Brookhaven College/DCCCD guarantee to its associate in arts / associate in sciences graduates and other students who have met the requirements of a 60-credit-hour transfer-plan, the transferability of course credits to those Texas colleges or universities which have chosen to participate in the Transfer Guarantee Program. If such courses are rejected by the college or the university, the student may take tuition-free alternative courses at a DCCCD college which are acceptable to the college or university. In addition, students may receive the Associate of College/University Transfer Degree upon the completion of 61 credit-hours which are included in the Student Transfer Guarantee.

Planning to transfer to a state four year college or university?

Students should be aware that there are limits on the number of lower-division freshman and sophomore, courses that Texas public and universities will accept in transfer. In many cases, the maximum number of college-level courses accepted in transfer toward a bachelor's degree is 66; although some universities may accept slightly more in special cases.

To ensure that you are enrolling in courses that will apply towards a bachelor's degree, please meet with an advisor to discuss unique transfer situations.

Special Conditions which apply to the guarantee are as follow:

  1. Transferability means the acceptance of credits toward a specific major and degree. Courses must be identified by the receiving university as transferable and applicable]able in Transfer Guides dated 1991-92 or later;
  2. Limitations of total number of credits accepted in transfer, grades required, relevant grade point average and duration of transferability apply as stated in the catalog of the receiving institution; and
  3. The guarantee applies to courses included in a written transfer guide--which includes the institution to which the student will transfer, as well as the baccalaureate major and degree sought. Transfer guides dated 1995-1996 or before can be guaranteed by filing a Transfer Guarantee form with a Brookhaven College Guarantee Advisor

This guarantee is designed specifically for those Brookhaven College/DCCCD students who have made firm decisions about their major and the institution to which they plan to transfer. Brookhaven College/DCCCD works with a number of Texas institutions, such as those listed as follows,

and others, in order to make such guarantees possible.

In order to secure such a guarantee, students should begin the process in the Brookhaven College Advising Center by scheduling an appointment with the Transfer Guarantee advisor. Students who have completed a Transfer Guarantee may be eligible to receive the Associate of College/University Transfer Degree. Such students will be notified of this opportunity.

High School Programs

Before graduating from high school, students can earn college credit. Dual credit allows students to earn both high school credit and college credit for the same class. Tech Prep allows you to “bank” college credit earned in your high school class. Students who attend a public school in Dallas County might be eligible for a Rising Star scholarship. For more information about these programs call 972-860-4849 or e-mail bhOutreach@dcccd.edu.

HONORS PROGRAM

Brookhaven College offers specially designated courses for students who enjoy a richer and more challenging academic experience. Honors courses have smaller enrollments to encourage student involvement. Instructors are discussion leaders and group facilitators more often than lecturers. Formats may include seminars, team taught classes, accelerated classes, interdisciplinary courses and courses with honors components. These offerings not only will emphasize facts, concepts and skills, but also will encourage reading, writing, discussion and collaboration with peers. Courses will be flagged as "honors" on the transcript.
