Academic standing is based upon Grade Point Average, GPA 1. A GOOD academic standing requires a GPA 1 of 2.0 or higher.
Students with an academic standing of SUSP Suspension, DISM Academic Dismissal or IDIS Indefinite Academic Dismissal cannot take any courses and are required to sit out for a semester or longer.
SUSP carries a one semester penalty (May term, Summer I and II count as one semester), while DISM and IDIS require a student to sit out for 12 months. After sitting out, a student may file an appeal to change the academic standing to probation - PROB 2 or 3.
Transfer students who are not in good academic standing at their previously attended institution will be placed on probation - PROB 1, and are subject to the probation procedures established by Brookhaven College.
A student on academic probation may be limited to fewer course hours and is only eligible to enroll in courses offered by Brookhaven College. Students on probation MUST register in person by the probation registration deadline and are not eligible to register or drop courses online.
NOTE: There is no appeal for missing the deadline. Students on probation are not eligible to register for flex term courses after the deadline. The earliest opportunity to register will be the following semester.
The flowcharts explain how GPA impacts academic standing, the consequences of poor performance and the requirements to reach GOOD academic standing.
NOTE: Any student who has not attended a DCCCD college in more than one year must go to the Admissions Office and reapply to the college before proceeding to the Advising Center.
Follow these instructions every semester until you reach GOOD academic standing (GPA 1 of 2.0 or higher); plan early and register before the probation registration deadline.
PROB 1: Students on probation 1 are required to attend a Probation Information Session prior to meeting with an advisor and registering for courses. Call (972) 860-4830 or come by the Advising Center (S113) to sign up. Bring a completed copy of the Time Management Worksheet when attending the session. Arrive 10 minutes before the info session begins to complete the additional requirements; arrive on time, otherwise it may become necessary to reschedule.
PROB 2: Students on probation 2 MUST meet with an academic advisor. Students on PROB 2 need to bring completed copies of the Success Contract and the Time Management Worksheet when meeting with an advisor.
PROB 3: Students on probation 3 MUST meet with a probation 3 advisor. Students on PROB 3 need to bring completed copies of the Success Contract and the Time Management Worksheet when meeting with a probation 3 advisor.
SUSP - Students on Suspension cannot attend a DCCCD college for one semester (May term, Summer I and II count as one semester). After sitting out, students MUST meet with an academic advisor before registering as a PROB 2 student.
DISM - Students on Academic Dismissal cannot attend a DCCCD college for 12 months and upon return MUST meet with a probation 3 advisor before registering as a PROB 3 student.
IDIS - Students on Indefinite Academic Dismissal cannot attend a DCCCD college for at least 12 months. Students on indefinite academic dismissal MUST speak with a probation 3 advisor in order to determine eligibility.
Students with an academic standing of SUSP, DISM or IDIS must complete ALL three of the documents below and bring copies when they meet with an advisor:
We want to help you reach your goals; however, you will need to make your education a top priority. You will need to make the appropriate arrangements to meet with a probation advisor in order to successfully plan your academic future. If you work during the college’s hours of operation, you will need to take the time off work to meet with a probation advisor. This will require you to make arrangements to arrive at the Advising Center between the hours of 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. You must arrive a few hours before the Advising Center closes in order to allow adequate time for advisement. Be mindful during registration periods that you may have to commit several hours of your time to complete the registration process. PROB 3 advisors are available on Monday and Thursday evenings.
