Subject: Course Syllabus

The Instructional staff is responsible for the preparation and maintenance of course outlines and syllabi. Syllabus formats are available in the Division Office. Listed below are the procedures.

1.   A complete file of course outlines is to be on file in the office of the Division Dean.

2.   Course outlines are revised at the end of the spring term and filed again at the beginning of the fall term. Each Division Dean is responsible for the implementation of this policy/procedure.

3.   Periodic audits of division syllabi will be made.

Part I

A.     General Information

         1.   Course title and number

         2.   Catalog description

         3.   Course competencies

         4.   Course objectives

         5.   A general statement indicating that an instructor has the right to add, delete, or revise segments of the course or syllabus.

Part II

B.      Policies

         1.   Calendar, schedule of due dates

         2.   Attendance expectations

         3.   Drop/withdrawal policies and procedures

         4.   Safety policies and procedures

         5.   Use of equipment, facilities and resources.

C.     Evaluation

         1.   Grading procedures

         2.   Where appropriate, explanation of Competency Based Instruction (CBI) and performance grades

         3.   Use of Testing Center

Study Guides: Instructors using Study Guides will develop concise syllabi for students using the Brookhaven College Syllabus format. Study guides are purchased in the Bookstore.

Syllabi should be brief and concise and given to the students during the first week of classes.
