Brookhaven College fosters the philosophy of a diverse and stimulating educational environment which encourages the inclusion of guest speakers in the academic forum. Also, the College policy has been designed to insure that students are exposed to alternative views of a presented topic. If a guest’s topic or perspective is known to be controversial or extreme, it is advisable to establish, with the speaker, time for rebuttal or debate within the class. This is to insure that the primary purpose of such programs is informational and not indoctrination. (See Policies & Procedures ED) 1. In the instructional area, guests speakers for both day and evening classes are approved by the Division Dean. 2. A “Notification of Guest Speaker” form is completed and submitted to the Division Dean one (1) week prior to the date the speaker is on campus. 3. It is the responsibility of the Division Dean to assure an opportunity for rebuttal, if the speaker is presenting or discussing controversial issues. 4. It is the responsibility of the Division Dean to notify the Executive Vice President of Instruction and Student Support Services when a controversial speaker has been invited to the campus. 5. The Public Information Office is also notified of visiting speakers on campus. 6. The Executive Vice President for Instruction and Student Support Services is responsible for notifying the President of guest speakers on campus. Any recognized campus organization may invite speakers to campus, subject to complying with the following procedures: 1. All speakers scheduled that are not part of classroom activities but using a College facility must be registered with Student Programs And Resources (SPAR). The purpose of registration is to provide information on campus events and provide for orderly and efficient use of the College facilities. 2. Registration must be at least two weeks in advance of the program. |
