Possible Success Directions
Students
1. Brookhaven will
improve communications with students about individual student needs and
about services available to all students.
Sample Initiative:
Sending e-mails automatically to students with information about drop
dates, registration, campus events etc.
2. Brookhaven will
offer students opportunities to set and refine their goals.
Sample Initiative:
An instructor including a unit in a course which helps students set,
refine and revise goals for their education.
3. Brookhaven will
explore non-traditional definitions of student success in order to give
a clearer picture of the success all our students achieve.
Sample Initiative:
Collecting and publishing success stories from past students who might
not have graduated but still consider their experience at Brookhaven
a success.
4. Brookhaven will
expand opportunities for students to participate in the life of the campus
and to be engaged in the campus and in the larger community.
Sample Initiatives:
Offering an intramural athletic program.
An instructor making community service a part of course requirements.
5. Brookhaven will
foster closer relationships between international students and other students,
faculty, and staff and will take the needs of international students into
consideration in planning facilities and programs.
Sample Initiatives:
Setting up a conversation partnership between native English speakers
and international students.
Offering student housing for international students.
6. Brookhaven will
develop programs and services for groups of students which have been traditionally
under-served or unsuccessful, including students with disabilities.
Sample Initiative:
Starting a program for mentoring of African-American male students by
second-year students and by faculty and staff.
Instruction
7. Brookhaven will
maintain high academic standards and high expectations of student success.
Sample Initiative:
The English department deciding on common grading standards for English
1301 and having a grading workshop for full and part-time instructors.
8. Brookhaven will
help students obtain up to date knowledge and skills needed to succeed
in jobs and careers.
Sample Initiative:
Using employer surveys and advisory committee input to update courses.
9. Brookhaven will
offer professional development to aid full and part-time instructors in
meeting the needs of students with diverse learning styles.
Sample Initiative:
Offering learning style workshops open to all faculty.
10. Brookhaven
will encourage and support instruction which goes beyond the classroom
to put students in real life situations and will work to integrate the
learning of life skills with the learning of classroom skills and content.
Sample Initiative:
Involving biology students in the establishment of a wildlife habitat
restoration project.

will encourage creativity in teaching and the sharing of teaching ideas.

Having departmental meetings for the sole purpose of discussing challenges
we face with our classes and sharing teaching ideas.
Employee/Professional
Development
12. Brookhaven
will foster communication between and among employee groups so that all
employee concerns are heard and needs are addressed.

Having liaisons between Student Services and each instructional division.
13. Brookhaven
will foster a culture of customer service among all employees.
Sample Initiative:
Setting up a system to recognize and reward excellent customer service
to students and to colleagues.

will develop an institutional culture which fosters employee success by
initiating programs to support employees, to recognize their efforts,
and to offer them opportunities for growth and advancement.

Establishing a career ladder for staff advancement.

will support adjunct faculty with professional development activities
and better integrate them into the life of the campus.
Sample Initiatives:
Involving adjunct faculty in departmental planning and decision-making.
Extending special invitations to adjunct faculty to attend all-college
meetings, with rewards for attendance.

will offer professional development to full-time and part-time employees
concerning topics which will help them support student success.

Organizing semester-long groups of faculty doing classroom research.
Offering workshops for professional support staff who are not directly
involved in instruction on how to help students be successful.
Facilities/Technology

will tailor facilities to meet the needs of a growing student body for
instruction, student services, and facilities.

Expanding the Testing Center.

will maintain up to date technology for both institutional and instructional
use.

Upgrading office computers to meet district standards.

will explore new technologies for communicating with students, employees,

Surveying students for their opinions on the usability of college and

Systematically collecting e-mail addresses from students and making them
available to staff and instructors who work with the students.
Administration

will conduct regular, periodic examinations of all College procedures,
programs, and services.

Conducting an evaluation on the effectiveness of the orientation process.

will foster institutional effectiveness by maintaining and updating its
planning, budgeting, and evaluation system.

Undertaking a revision of the Brookhaven Success Directions.
22. Brookhaven
will strive for greater diversity of students and of employees, including
diversity of race and culture.

Initiating programs for employees to sensitize them to cultural differences
in our students.
23. Brookhaven
will meet the diverse needs of students by offering a variety of delivery
systems and scheduling opportunities and will provide support and services
for faculty and students in such courses.

Expanding weekend and online offerings
Expanding student services so students in mini-mesters can be served.
24. Brookhaven
will consider the needs and success of Workforce and Continuing Education
programs, faculty, and students in making planning and budgeting decisions.
