Brookhaven College
has chosen to undertake an alternative self-study as part of the Southern
Association of Colleges and Schools reaffirmation process. The project
grew out of a college-wide effort to set forth a new vision for the
college. The direction chosen by the campus and the focus of the
alternative self-study is "The Success College."
The committee charged with exploring success at Brookhaven looked at
the concept broadly-- as encompassing goal setting and completion by
students, employees and the community-- but settled on student success
as the college's first priority. The purpose of the alternative self-study
project is to develop and implement a plan that will increase substantially
the number of students at BHC who attain defined exit points through
successful planning and completing of their educational goals. Accordingly,
the Alternative Model Steering Committee will set about to make goal
setting and revising an integral part of the college culture and to
develop a system of capturing, refining and assessing achievement of
student goals. Other crucial activities will include developing and
implementing appropriate ways of communicating with students about their
progress, and conducting a thorough examination of college processes,
services, courses and academic services, with enhancing student success
in mind.
The committee will choose an appropriate pilot group to begin assessing
the feasibility of these initiatives and will then expand their implementation
to larger groups as the processes prove themselves. The final stage
of the project will be the institutionalization of successful structures
and the development of continuing strategies for enhancing student success.
