TSI Exemptions and Waivers

A student is exempt from one or more TSI requirements under the following conditions.

NOTE: SAT, ACT, TAKS, and STAAR scores used to support an exemption must be less than five years old.

  • A student with an SAT combined score of at least 1070 and a math score of at least 500 is exempt from the math requirement
  • A student with an SAT combined score of at least 1070 and a critical reading score of at least 500 is exempt from the reading and writing requirements
  • A student with an ACT composite score of at least 23 and a math score of at least 19 is exempt from the math requirement
  • A student with an ACT composite score of at least 23 and an English score of at least 19 is exempt from the reading and writing requirements
  • A student with an exit-level TAKS math score of at least 2200 is exempt from the math requirement
  • A student with an exit-level TAKS English/language arts score of at least 2200 and an essay score of at least 3 is exempt from the reading and writing requirements
  • A student with a score of at least Level 2 on the STAAR English III end-of-course (EOC) is exempt from the reading and writing requirements
  • A student with a score of at least Level 2 on the STAAR Algebra II end-of-course (EOC) is exempt from the math requirement
  • A student who has earned an associate degree or higher is exempt from all TSI requirements from an institution of higher education.
  • A student who has a TSI exemption from another Texas public college or university.
  • A student who has transferred from a private or independent institution of higher education, an accredited out-of-state institution of higher education, and has completed college-level coursework
  • A student who on or after August 1, 1990, was honorably discharged, retired or released from active duty as a member of the armed forces of the United States or the Texas National Guard or service as a member of a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States. Must provide a copy of DD214 to document exemption.
  • A student who is currently serving on active duty as a member of the armed forces of the United States, the Texas National Guard or a reserve component of the armed forces of the United States and has been serving for at least three years preceding enrollment.
  • A student who is enrolled in a certificate program of one year or less will be waived of TSI requirements (for Level-One certificates, with 42 or fewer semester credit hours). The program of study must be on file, students are not exempt from TSI if they take courses that are not included in the Level-One Certificate.
  • Students in English for Speakers of Other Language programs may be granted an ESOL waiver from TSI testing. The ESOL waiver must be removed after the student attempts 15 hours of ESOL coursework/interventions, or attempts entry-level freshman coursework.

Test scores must be documented on an official transcript. Faxes, student score reports or photocopies are not considered official.
