Texas Success Initiative (TSI)

Procedures for New to College Students:

Before registering for your first credit course at Brookhaven College, you must meet the requirements of the Texas Success Initiative, TSI.  The TSI is a state legislated program designed to improve student success.  There are two components of the program.

  1. An assessment to determine a student’s basic skill level in reading, writing and math.
  2. Developmental instruction to strengthen academic skills that need improvement.
Based on how you perform, you may either be enrolled in a college-level course that matches your skill level or be placed in the appropriate developmental course or intervention to improve your skill level. The assessment must be taken before you can enroll in any college-level course at any Texas public institutions of higher education.

Exemptions and Waivers:

Some students may qualify for an exemption or a waiver from one or more of the TSI requirements. Students who attain prescribed levels on their SAT, ACT, TAKS and/or STARR scores, have earned college credits or a degree, or have served in the military may be exempt from TSI.

Students who believe they may be exempt from the TSI requirements should carefully read the full list of TSI exemptions.

Pre-Assessment Activity:

Students who are not exempted from TSI requirements must take the TSI Assessment.  Before taking the TSI Assessment, students must participate in a Pre-Assessment Activity, PAA. http://econnect.dcccd.edu/PreAssessmentVideo/BHC.jsp
The PAA includes:

  • an explanation of the importance of the TSI Assessment;
  • an explanation of your developmental education options if you don’t meet the minimum passing standard;
  • information on campus resources that will help you succeed as a college student; and,
  • mandatory practice test questions and feedback.

Once you have completed the TSI Pre-Assessment Activity, your participation will be documented, which is required to take the TSI Assessment.  Students must click the “Submit” button at the bottom of the page to document their participation for the TSI Pre-Assessment Activity.

PAWS (Pre-Assessment Workshop Session) Room S020:

After finishing the Pre-Assessment Activity, students will be directed to PAWS in the Student Services Center, Bldg. S, Room S020.  Students will receive their testing referral form for the TSI Assessment as well as receive further information and assistance in preparing for the TSI Assessment.
