Brookhaven College cares about its students’ academic, emotional and physical success. This commitment to students has led to the creation of a CARE Team. The CARE Team addresses students whose behavior or mental, emotional or psychological health condition may be disruptive, harmful or pose a direct threat to themselves or to the health and safety of the college community.
The college has many departments and services devoted to responding to students’ unique needs. However, many times students do not ask for help when they need it, so it has become imperative that college employees and students learn to identify and refer students who are in mental distress to the Counseling Center.
In 2009, Brookhaven College implemented a Mental Health Screening Tool for students to use to help them self-identify depression, anxiety, substance abuse, eating disorders and PTSD. This year, the college purchased Kognito At Risk software to train employees to identify and refer students in mental distress. The next step in this process is the creation of the CARE Team that responds to employee referrals to provide students with the greatest chance of success and our college community with the greatest level of protection.
The Brookhaven College CARE Team is a group of qualified and dedicated college professionals with a shared mission.
- Support student success
- Provide a structured, positive method to respond to students whose behavior is disruptive to themselves or others
- Assist in protecting the health, safety and welfare of the students and members of the college community
- Act as a resource for college employees
- Manage each case individually and eliminate fragmented care
