The Brookhaven College Police Department Bike Patrol Unit was formed in June 1998. The unit currently has four full-time police officers assigned. The officers perform traffic duties and patrol the parking areas and campus grounds including the two-mile jogging path.
The Bike Unit is primarily a crime prevention tool that allows officers to be more accessible to the college community. Officers have greater patrol flexibility and can cover more distance on campus grounds than in a traditional patrol vehicle. Bike officers are highly visible, yet their quiet approach capability allows them to ride up on criminal activity while it is occurring.
The bicycles are black, Raleigh F-500, with special police package logos and features. The bikes have Shimano STX 24-speed gearing, Rock-Shox front suspension, and Shimano Deore XT “stealth” derailluers. The Continental Town & Country tires have puncture sealing “Slime tube” inner-tubes and hardened liners to prevent flat tires. Nylon equipment bags have police logos and contain officer’s citation books, first aid kits and other duty equipment.
