Safety, motor vehicle operations, personal vehicle assistance and parking are an important part of our work. Speed LimitsThe speed limit on the college loop roadway is 20 mph. The speed limit on interior roadways and all parking lots is 10 mph. Reserved ParkingBrookhaven College has two reserved parking areas. One is in the lot labeled East1, Rows A, B and C. The other is the lot labeled West2, Rows A and B. These two areas are for Brookhaven College faculty and staff members and are marked with signage and striped in yellow paint. Each semester, drivers who do not display a Brookhaven College parking decal are issued a citation by the Police Department for parking a vehicle in the areas that are reserved for employees. Parking DecalsStudents are not required to have any decal on their vehicles. A parking decal shall be issued to administrators, faculty and staff who are interested in using reserved Faculty/Staff parking areas. Full and limited full-time employees receive a red decal and may park in reserved parking at any time. Part-time faculty and staff are issued a yellow decal and may park in reserved parking after 5 p.m. only, Monday through Friday. Parking decals for Brookhaven College employees are free and available at the Police Department Office, Bldg. B, Room B200. The decal should be placed in the lower left corner of the rear window. On cars with tinted rear windows, the decal should be affixed to the windshield on the passenger side. The decal must be permanently adhered (not taped) to the window. Decals are issued annually and are valid until Dec. 31 of each year. A temporary parking “hang tag” may be issued for a specific time period with approval of the chief of police. If a vehicle is sold and a replacement decal is needed, a new decal can be issued and the old decal voided. Parking ViolationsThe following parking violations will result in a citation from the Brookhaven College Police Department:
The following are the procedures for parking violators at Brookhaven College.
The cited driver/owner of the vehicle having a wheel-immobilizing device on it, will be required to pay a fine for the parking infraction. Fines are $5 for the first violation and $10 for each additional violation and must be paid at the Brookhaven College Cashier’s Office in the Student Services Center, Building S. To have the wheel-immobilizing device removed, the driver must bring the receipt for the paid fine to the Brookhaven College Police Department, located in Bldg. B, Room B200. For service when the Cashier’s Office is closed, visit the Police Department. Campus Entrance and Exit GatesThe Brookhaven College campus closes at 11:30 p.m. and reopens at 6 a.m., seven days a week. Gates at each entrance and exit will be closed to limit access during these hours. For assistance, after hours, please call the Police Department at 972-860-4290. Personal Vehicle Services ProvidedThe Police Department will upon request provide personal vehicle assistance to anyone desiring this service. Officers are available to jump start a vehicle’s dead battery, open a locked vehicle or air up a flat tire. Prior to providing this service, the operator of the vehicle must sign a “Release of Liability” form releasing the officer from liability claims, demands, or lawsuits resulting from any damage done to a vehicle owned or legally operated by the individual requesting the service. Due to injury liabilities, officers are not permitted to change flat tires on vehicles parked on campus. However, the Police Department does have an “air compressor” and will assist, when possible, to air up the tire for the operator requesting this type of personal service. Emergency Call BoxesEmergency call boxes situated around campus make it quick and convenient to request personal assistance, report suspicious activity and help prevent crime on campus. Please do not hesitate to alert the police via call box if you observe suspicious activity on campus or would like an escort to or from your vehicle. In order to provide a safe environment for everyone who uses the campus facilities, there are 15 emergency call boxes in the parking lots and nine call boxes installed along the two-mile walking/jogging trail. All of the emergency call boxes are equipped with a single “call button,” red in color, located on the face of the box. This button is used whenever communication is required. To use the call box, push and release the button. When answered by the police dispatcher, hold down the button to talk and release the button to listen. |
