Learning to lead is a quest’it involves questioning, understanding, experiences, service, training and more. The Student Leadership Institute is the ticket and can help you explore this frontier. SLI is a leadership development program open to all Brookhaven College students and offers a diverse itinerary of retreats, training sessions, seminars and conferences. SLI provides opportunities for you to:
- Develop your leadership skills.
- Discover your personal leadership style.
- Make new friends.
- Add to your resume and personal portfolio. Studies show that employers consider student involvement a key to success.
- Reflect on your values.
- Improve your credentials for scholarships.
- Meet one-on-one with college, community and national leaders.
- Succeed academically. Students who get involved in campus life are less likely to drop out of school.
- Celebrate your accomplishments.
- Get your passport to leadership stamped for success. SLI can help you make a real difference on your campus, in your community and in your career.

Choose a membership level
You can choose the level of participation in the Student Leadership Institute that best suits your goals and schedule. Requirements for membership levels are:
- MEMBER Completes two SLI activities
- FOUR-STAR MEMBER Completes four SLI activities Plus one leadership elective*
- SIX-STAR MEMBER Completes six SLI activities Plus one leadership elective*
- ALL-STAR MEMBER Completes ten SLI activities Plus two leadership electives*
*A Leadership Elective can be an independent project, an additional SLI event, an alternative activity (Ambassadors Program, campus committee, other conference, training workshops, etc.) or community service. Check with SPAR staff for approval and elective opportunities.
You can complete requirements for your membership goal in one or two semesters, (fall and/or spring) and, if needed, can change membership level.

SLI applications are available in the Student Programs And Resources Office, BHC Room S201.
- All SLI participants must attend an orientation session.
- Participants must sign up for SLI activities in advance and be committed to attend.
- All SLI participants receive Quest, a monthly newsletter that provides information about SLI events, other leadership opportunities and scholarships.
- All SLI members are recognized at end-of-the-year celebrations.
- You may join SLI anytime throughout the fall semester.
