Revised Spring 2006
Note: This is a sample syllabus. It is not the exact syllabus the instructor will distribute at the beginning of an academic term to the students enrolled in the course. This sample is to be used only as a general guide about the instruction that will be presented in the course.
The course description for JOUR 1129, 1130, 2129 and 2130, News Publications, may be found in the online Catalog and also in the print edition of the Brookhaven College 2004-2006 Catalog on page 229. Page 163 of the print catalog also has a graphic showing how to read the course description information.
The student will have an awareness of the functioning of a small newspaper and will understand the importance of accepting responsibility for completing newspaper-related tasks.
The student will perform newspaper regular duties for the campus newspaper as assigned. Stories submitted to the newspaper staff may be published in both the print and online versions of the student newspaper. Students may specialize in the following areas: writing, advertising, photography, cartooning and editing.
Meet due dates.
According to the DCCCD Catalog, "Students are expected to attend regularly all classes in which they are enrolled. Students have the responsibility to attend class and to consult with the instructor when an absence occurs."
If you are unable to complete this course, you must withdraw from it by the drop date published in the Brookhaven College Credit Course Schedule. Withdrawing from a course is a procedure which YOU must initiate; the instructor cannot do it for you. You may do this in the Advising and Counseling Center by following the procedure in the Credit Course Schedule. If you stop attending and do not withdraw, you will receive a performance grade, usually an "F." Students sometimes drop courses when help is available that would help them to continue. Discuss your plans with your instructor if you feel the need to withdraw.
The course grade will be based on performance of duties assigned during the course. The student will be required to submit a stringbook including all work done during the semester as well as a journal detailing all work done for EACH issue of the campus newspaper during the semester. Late work will be graded down. The course grade will reflect the student's overall level of work.
Each student will be responsible for performing duties as assigned by the instructor or the editors. Quantity and quality of work, dependability, attendance, attitude and ability to meet deadlines will be considered in determining the student's course grade.
