Catalog Description

The course description for MATH 1351 Teaching Mathematics in Elementary and Middle School II may be found in the online Catalog and also in the print edition of the Brookhaven College 2004-2006 Catalog on page 231. Page 163 of the print catalog also has a graphic showing how to read the course description information.

Course Objectives

The student will:

  1. Understand the concept of proportional reasoning.
  2. Be able to teach ratio and proportions.
  3. Be able to teach how to translate freely among percents, fractions and decimals.
  4. Understand the interrelationship between statistics and probability.
  5. Be able to teach how to represent and interpret data with multiple methods including line graphs, bar graphs, circle graphs, stem plots, frequency tables, histograms, line plots and box plots.
  6. Be able to teach how to find measures of central tendency and different ways to quantify the dispersion of data using range, clusters, gaps, interquartile range and standard deviation.
  7. Be able to teach basic probability concepts including complementary events, mutually exclusive events, expected values, experimental probability and theoretical probability.
  8. Be able to teach combinations and permutations.
  9. Understand the van Hiele Levels of Geometric Thinking.
  10. Be able to teach basic concepts of geometry in one dimension, two dimensions and three dimensions.
  11. Be able to teach about transformations, symmetry, tessellations and similarity.
  12. Understand geometry as measurement and be able to teach systems of measurement and precision.
  13. Be able to teach how to find perimeter, area, surface area and volume.
  14. Be able to use a variety of manipulatives to teach mathematical concepts in grades 4-8.

The room assignment for the course may be found in the Credit Course Schedule and also is printed on the paid fee receipt.

Attendance

Students are expected to attend regularly all classes in which they are enrolled and to consult with the instructor when an absence occurs. If a student is unable to complete a course, it is the responsibility of the student to drop the course by the drop date listed in the academic calendar. Dropping a course is a formal procedure which the student must initiate; the instructor cannot do it. The Admissions Office processes adding and dropping of courses. The Admissions Office is located in the Student Services Center, Building S, Room S052.

Students who officially drop this course or withdraw from the college before the deadline will receive a “W” grade in this course. If a student stops attending class but does not officially drop the course through the Admissions Office, the student’s transcript will show a performance grade for the course, usually an “F.”

Students who will be absent from class for the observance of a religious holiday must notify the instructor in advance. Please refer to the college catalog section Attending Classes.

Evaluation Procedures

Your final grade will be determined using the following weights:
50 percent Homework
20 percent Unit of Study Project
10 percent Article Summaries
20 percent Attendance

The scale used to determine the final course grade is:

90 to 100 = A
80 to 89 = B
70 to 79 = C
60 to 69 = D
0 to 59 = F

If an unforeseen emergency prevents a student from completing the work in a course, a grade of “Incomplete,” or “I,” will be given. The division dean must approve all “I” grades.
