President's Sustainability Committee

President's Sustainability Committee

In fall 2016, Dr. Thom D. Chesney, Brookhaven College president, instituted the President's Sustainability Committee to build capacity for sustainability initiatives and achievement at Brookhaven College. Seventeen students, employees and community members were invited to serve.

Purpose

To develop, assess and continually improve college efforts to:

  • Institutionalize sustainability practices in alignment with Board and college strategic priorities;
  • Achieve carbon neutrality, zero waste and positive water balance;
  • Collaborate with community to raise awareness of sustainability and support planning to achieve a desirable future for all; and
  • Teach sustainability.

Ideas and Action

The committee met Nov. 4, 2016 to brainstorm ideas and prioritize objectives and subsequently divided into five Action Teams to work on:

  • College mission and values;
  • Facilities and operations;
  • Academics;
  • Transportation and engagement; and
  • Finance.
