Tree Campus USA

Tree Campus USA®

Brookhaven College was first recognized as a Tree Campus USA® by the Arbor Day Foundation for 2013 and again for 2014 and 2015. Of the 245 colleges and universities that have achieved this status, only 25 community colleges have received this recognition. To achieve Tree Campus USA® status, Brookhaven met five required criteria:

  • A steering committee of community members, including students;
  • A detailed Tree Care Plan;
  • Dedicated annual budget for tree growth and care
  • Observance of Arbor Day; and
  • Service learning opportunities for students, such as volunteering to plant trees.

Our 195 acre campus – located on a former farm – is home to many native and ornamental trees. Bounded by a wild thicket at its southwest corner and a creek along its north side, the “urban forest” is a resource for wildlife as well as our students and our community. Since 2013 Brookhaven College has planted 400 trees.
