TSI Assessment Testing

Once you apply for admission and complete orientation (if required), the next step is assessment testing.

Before registering for your first credit course, you must meet the requirements of the Texas Success Initiative (TSI), which includes a pre-assessment activity and assessment testing.

Texas Success Initiative (TSI)

TSI is a state-legislated program designed to improve student success in college. Part of the program is an assessment to determine your basic skills in reading, mathematics and writing.

All credit students are required by law to take an assessment test approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB).

See exemptions to determine if you are exempt from TSI requirements.

Brookhaven College administers state-approved TSI assessments.

Pre-Assessment Activity

You will be required to complete a pre-assessment activity before taking the actual assessment test.

During the pre-assessment activity, you will view sample test questions and will also have the opportunity to take a practice test before completing the official TSI test.

Taking Your Assessment Test

On your test date, you will need:

  • A referral form
  • Your student ID or any other photo ID

Once you have completed your pre-assessment activity and assessment, advisors will use your test scores to recommend course choices during registration.

The Brookhaven College Testing Center expects its students to follow testing policies and procedures while utilizing the provided services. Please read carefully over the following information to prepare yourself for the day of your exam.

Bring a government-issued or student ID

  • Photo identification will be required before any test is given. If you do not have a driver's license, a photo ID card can be obtained from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Electronics

  • Cell phones, iPods, mp3 players and other electronic devices are not allowed. Failure to adhere to this policy will result in dismissal from the Testing Center.

Storage

  • Coin-operated lockers are available in the Student Services Center to store books and other small personal belongings while you test. They cost 25 cents per use. Backpacks can be stored in your car. The Bookstore can provide change for the lockers.

Outside Materials

  • No outside books, papers, notes, calculators or other aids are allowed unless specified by your instructor if you are taking an instructional exam. If it is determined you have unauthorized materials at your desk, your test will be taken from you and your academic records will immediately be blocked.  Your instructor and division dean will also be notified.

Children

  • Children are not allowed in the Testing Center.  Children cannot be left unattended in the Student Services Center, surrounding buildings or parking lots while you test.

Instructional Testing

Some instructors prefer to have their students take tests at the testing center. Students utilize the testing labs at the center to complete the exam per the instructor's requests.

You will need to provide:

  1. photo identification;
  2. course name, number and section number;
  3. test number or name;
  4. instructor's name; and
  5. permission slip, if required by your instructor.
