DCCCD’s Health Careers Resource Center (HCRC) has received more than $700,000 in donations from donors in order to launch and maintain its operations serving the health care community.
The HCRC works with all seven colleges of DCCCD:Brookhaven • Cedar Valley • Eastfield • El Centro • Mountain View • North Lake • Richland
The HCRC connects DCCCD allied health students with employers in the health care industry to meet local workforce demand for skilled workers.
Under the guidance of industry leaders, the center was created in 2010 to serve as a community resource by accelerating program completion by and employment of DCCCD health professions students.
The HCRC serves as a clearinghouse and pathway advising service for any Dallas County resident interested in a career in a health care career. By connecting students to the right health career for them, the HCRC accelerates student completion and employment. The center also coordinates partnerships with local health care employers to place graduates in some of the most in-demand positions in North Texas through its
healthjobs.dcccd.edu applicant system.
Each year in the colleges of DCCCD, 18,500 students take courses in preparation to enroll in health professions programs. An additional 1,350 students enroll in health professions credit programs and 2,000 more complete noncredit health-related programs. The seven colleges of DCCCD together offer 48 credit allied health programs and 72 noncredit programs. Students are connected to employers via the HELIX system, where more than 50 employers have posted thousands of positions to date. Located at 701 Elm St. across from El Centro College, the HCRC provides a library of career resources, advising by health care professionals, interest tools and job solutions to help students select the appropriate career path based on their specific interests and skills. The HCRC also works with area high schools to introduce students to career pathways and assists with identifying program gaps based on industry feedback and recommendations.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the health care sector will add 5 million jobs to the national economy through 2022, nearly one-third of all projected growth. This translates into an increasingly critical shortage of skilled workers with negative impact on both the health care system and the general economy.
To help strengthen and grow the pipeline of skilled health care workers for area employers, the HCRC developed the HELIX applicant system. HELIX posts local health care job listings and allows employers to search résumés of DCCCD health professions students seeking jobs, while providing students listings of job opportunities in their fields.
The HCRC is the first model of its kind in the nation, providing an integrated, comprehensive solution for the shortage of health care workers.
With the TWC excluding soft skills from grant training, Richland’s Corporate Services Division has greatly increased its offerings in this area with DCMA company partners to fill the gap in developing leadership and supervisory skills with their organizations. The college is now on its third round of DCMA Leadership Academy classes with the Garland Chamber of Commerce.
With the guidance of a strategic leadership team consisting of health care industry chief executive officers and a sub-committee of area human resource vice presidents, the HCRC provides a one-stop location for students to access options for credit and fast-track continuing education programs and pre-programming advising, and to respond to employer needs within the community. This ongoing communication with industry partners allows for a timely response to specific training or employer needs and allows the HCRC to provide solutions to complex problems related to health care employee shortages.
To date, the HCRC has served more than 3,500 students — both virtually and face-to-face — with program and career advising. Of the students enrolled within the health care related programs receiving HCRC assistance, 94.7 percent were retained to program completion in the 2012-2013 academic year and 90 percent were retained to degree completion in the 2013-2014 academic year. Getting students on the right path in an area that they are interested in provides the pathway for completion. This approach helps health care organizations meet workforce demands within a growing industry sector.
The HCRC initiative would not have been successful without its strong, industry-led steering committee and leadership support by DCCCD. Initiatives must become part of operations to create an impact over an extended period of time, and this model may be a solution for other high-demand training areas. With industry support from area hospital systems, the HCRC demonstrates the successful collective impact of partnerships between industry and education to meet critical workforce demands.
