Medical Front Office

Are you organized and good at keeping track of details? Have you thought about a health career but would rather work in an office than with patients?

Medical front office assistants work in clinics and hospitals, doctors’ offices and in medical insurance.

“Front office” skills allow you to work in a medical setting without direct patient contact. Instead, you’ll use information technology to support health care staff in the “back office.”

You’ll be trained in common terms, office procedures, software, basic coding and insurance within a medical setting. All courses are offered on campus as face-to-face courses at Brookhaven College; some courses are also offered online.

What Does a Medical Front Office Assistant Do?

Special skills are necessary for handling a busy and demanding medical office. Front office support professionals perform administrative duties such as dealing with incoming and outgoing patients, scheduling and monitoring appointments and creating and maintaining patient records.

Employers are looking for workers who are skilled in computer knowledge, diversity, teamwork, communication and interpersonal skills. You’ll be trained in common medical terminology, medical office procedures, medical software applications, medical basic coding and medical insurance — so you can go right to work.

Why is This a Good Career Bet?

Fourteen of the top 20 fastest-growing jobs listed by CareerOneStop (sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor) are in health care occupations. Health information technician positions are projected to increase by 30 percent.

Workforce Solutions of Greater Dallas includes health information technicians among high-growth occupations through 2017, adding an estimated 2,180 jobs to the local economy with average wages of $20.94 an hour.
