Brookhaven College's Medical Front Office Assistant Medical Front Office Program develops and strengthens office skills for a medical setting. The program prepares students to work in entry-level office positions in a health care setting.

Program Mission Statement

The mission of the Medical Front Office Assistant Program is to provide a supportive environment for students to develop knowledge, skills and attitudes essential for successful employment in a medical front office setting including practices, clinics and hospitals.

What does a medical front office assistant do?

Special skills are necessary for handling a busy and demanding medical office. Employers are looking for workers who are skilled in computer applications, diversity, teamwork, communication and interpersonal skills without medically related patient contact. The work of medical office assistants includes the following:

  • information technology skills in the “front office” of a health-care facility so the medical staff, including care providers such as doctors and nurses, can function efficiently; and
  • administrative duties working with incoming and outgoing patients, scheduling and monitoring appointments, applying standardized codes to patient records, and insurance billing.
