Hurst got his start in college coaching at North Lake College as a student assistant under Dan Joutras, athletic director, during the 1995-1996 season.  Joining the Brookhaven staff as the first assistant in 2000, Hurst’s primary responsibility was recruiting.  In the 19 seasons before Hurst’s first recruiting class, the program averaged eight wins per year.  With Hurst’s recruiting Brookhaven has averaged more than 17 wins per season including a 25-6 record and Conference Co-Championship in 2007-2008 and 26-6 record and Conference Championship in 2011-2012.

Hurst’s fifteen Brookhaven recruiting classes have produced 67 All Conference selections, six Pre-season All-Americans, and a conference Most Valuable Player.  Prior to Hurst becoming head coach, the Bears had won 20+ games just once, but have now accomplished 20+ wins in five of the last nine years. The last fifteen seasons the team has averaged 80 points per game or higher and ten times the team has averaged 90 points per game or higher, including averaging 103.5 points per game in 2007-2008.  In 2010, Hurst became the All Time Winningest Coach in program history.  Hurst has also been selected MAC Co-Coach of the Year following the 2007-2008 and 2015-2016 campaigns.  Coach Hurst resides in Denton with his wife Lindsey and daughters Analisa and Emilee.
